A biomechanical study on proximal junctional kyphosis following long-segment posterior spinal fusion BJMBR
Zhu,Wen-Yi; Zang,Lei; Li,Jian; Guan,Li; Hai,Yong.
Posterior long-segment spinal fusion may lead to proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK). The present study sought to identify the appropriate fusion levels required in order to prevent PJK using finite element analysis. A finite element model was constructed based on the whole-spine computed tomography findings of a healthy adult. Nine commonly used posterior spinal fusion methods were selected. Stress on the annulus fibrosis fibers, the posterior ligamentous complex, and the vertebrae after various spinal fusions in the upright position were compared. This study was divided into two groups: non-fusion and fusion. In the former, the stress between the T10 and the upper thoracic vertebrae was higher. Comparing thoracic and lumbar segments in the fusion group,...

A study of the non-linear behaviour of adhesively-bonded composite assemblies ArchiMer
Cognard, Jean Yves; Davies, Peter; Sohier, S; Creac' Hcadec, R.
The objective of this study is to define a reliable tool for dimensioning of adhesively bonded assemblies, particularly for marine and underwater applications. This paper presents experimental and numerical results, which describe the non-linear behaviour of an adhesive in a bonded assembly for various loadings. A modified Arcan fixture, well-suited for the study of the behaviour of bonded metal-metal assemblies, was developed in order to focus on the analysis of the behaviour of the adhesive in thin films. The edge effects are minimised by using an appropriate design of the substrates so that experimental results give reliable data. To analyze the kinematics of the deformation of the adhesive joint non-contact extensometry techniques were employed. Thus,...

Design a biomimetic disc using geometric features of the claws CIGR Journal
Dehghan Hesar, Hadi; Kalantari, Davood.
This study presents a numerical investigation regarding the stress distribution on the new designed disc harrow using the ANSYS software. A conventional disc, notched disc, and a biomimetic design inspired by the claw of the leatherwing were analyzed in two conventional plowed and unplowed soils and three tillage depths (4, 7 and 10 cm). Stress analysis for all treatments showed that the highest stress was imposed at the disc-stem junction. Meanwhile the highest deformation occurred at the lowest and the most external part of the discs (land line). The results obtained in this study indicated that the maximum stress exerted from tilling soil to discs increases linearly with tillage depth in both plowed and unplowed soils. Given these results, the maximum...

Evaluation of the risk of marine slope instability: A pseudo-3D approach for application to large areas ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Cochonat, Pierre; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Cayocca, Florence.
This article presents a methodology developed to evaluate the instability of submarine slopes that extend over a large area. Special attention was paid to (1) the complex geometry (bathymetry) and the expanse of the slope, (2) the heterogeneity of the sediment, and (3) the distribution of the pore pressure. The safety factor was considered as a spatially varying quantity. The General Formulation (GLE, Fredlund and Krahn 1977), which fully satisfies equilibrium conditions, was used for evaluating the stability of the marine slope. The submarine slope failure, which occurred on 16 October 1979 during the construction of the new Nice airport, was studied in order to test the developed model. Geotechnical parameters were taken from experimental tests carried...

Two Dimensional Flow Simulation in Twin Screw Food Extruder Die CIGR Journal
Adekola, Kehinde Adedeji.
Food extrusion process involves heat and flow distribution. An accurate knowledge of flow pattern in food extruder die is essential for optimum extrusion operation. Limited works are available on simulation and modeling of heat and flow in food extruder. No reported work is available for flow modeling in twin screw food extruder die. In this study, two-dimensional flow simulation in food extruder die for intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder were performed by solving Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation for non-Newtonian fluid using finite element computer package, ANSYS/FLOTRAN. The objective of the study is to determine the nature of flow, heat and pressure distribution in the die and to determine the effect of screw speed on process...

Validity and limitations of linear analytical models for steel wire strands under axial loading, using a 3D FE model ArchiMer
Ghoreishi, S; Messager, T; Cartraud, P; Davies, Peter.
In the field of cable modeling, many models have been proposed to describe the mechanical behavior of simple straight strands under axial loading, and the predictions of these models have been compared to experimental data when available. However, the validity domain of these models has not been evaluated yet because the experimental results reported in the literature are very limited. This problem is addressed here, the results from nine linear elastic models of a 6 + 1 wire single layered strand (simple straight strand) subjected to static axial loads being compared with values from 3D finite element modeling. The analytical models are shown to give satisfactory estimations of the elastic stiffness constants for lay angles below 20 degrees. (C) 2007...
